Analysis of Spin State Commutation in Spin Crossover based Switchable Devices.

Abstract:

Molecular multifunctional switching materials with memory transduction attract a great scientific and technological attention due to potential utilization in nano- and molecular electronics, including switches, information storage, molecular spintronics, or sensors. A great advantage of molecule-based bistability is the great variety of external stimuli for change of electronic states of individual molecules. Spin crossover (SCO) materials are a type of molecular multifunctional material possessing labile electronic configurations switchable between the high- (HS) and low-spin (LS) states in response to temperature, pressure, light, adsorption, phase transition and is mostly studied for Fe(II) complexes. In the HS and LS states SCO compounds reveal drastic differences in magnetism, optical, electrical and dielectric properties, colour and structure. The goals of this project are manifolds and deal with the development of new multifunctional SCO based switchable devices, and aims to study, in the first part, the spin state commutation process in bulk-, micro-, nanometric sized SCO systems induced by various stimuli (temperature, pressure, etc). In the second part of this proposal, we plan to integrate SCO nanostructures in electric devices and electronic circuits in order to design logic electronic circuits. To fulfill these goals, we will start from the theoretical aspects of the spin state switching to the elaboration of prototypes of spin crossover based switchable devices.
